Zach Hughes

Westminster Christian Academy
Town and Country, Missouri

For this athlete and scholar, being gifted is more than a blessing; it’s a responsibility.

Zach Hughes’ parents have the joy of regularly hearing what every parent longs to hear: “Your son had such positive effect on my child.” A natural leader, Zach firmly believes he has an obligation to use his gifts for the greater good. He leverages his talent for communication to speak to and mentor other students in the classroom, on the field, and in his community. He speaks regularly at area high schools on topics such as safe sexual and emotional choices and is dedicated to racial reconciliation in his community. He even leads a breakfast club, inviting students and peers into his home each week for conversation and breakfast before school.

On the football field, track, and basketball court, Zach leads by example. His asthmatic lungs often resist two-hour conditioning sessions. But Zach knows each of his teammates faces challenges, too. He chooses to make the effort instead of the excuse, exemplifying dedication and commitment. Zach pushes through the academic challenges he faces, as well. When he earned a D on his first AP biology test, instead of dropping the class, he resolved to study harder. He ended up thoroughly enjoying the course and earning high marks.

Zach believes that working hard makes achievement all the sweeter. This conviction keeps him focused, even when things get most challenging. He says he’s built his strongest relationships with others who have struggled through hardships alongside him. And at the end of the day, Zach loves all that he does. For him, the rewards of accomplishment are well worth the effort.
