Defying the Odds

A passionate advocate for inclusion, this scholar-athlete works to ensure all students have opportunities to excel.

Logan Alvarez is used to being underestimated. He’s undersized for a football player. But despite not being the tallest or heaviest on the line, he put in the hard work and dedication to become an accomplished athlete. He was named a full-time varsity starter and Offensive Captain of his high school team beginning in his junior year, and he has plans to play Division I football at college next fall. Logan is also president of his class and a leader of several community and school organizations. He is poised to graduate as salutatorian.

Doing whatever it takes to overcome challenges is something Logan has learned from his family. His father is disabled and his sister faces medical issues. The problems his family has struggled with over the years have solidified Logan’s determination to keep pushing forward, especially in the face of adversity. And they have ignited his passion for making positive change that will pave the way for other families impacted by disabilities. Logan hopes to become an attorney and advocate for people’s rights. For now, he’s working to change the game in his own school.

To date, he has volunteered nearly 1,000 community service hours to organizations such as Best Buddies and Special Olympics that give young people with disabilities opportunities to fully participate in sports and the high school experience. “I am extremely passionate about encouraging inclusion for all students,” Logan says. “I think sports is a great way to break all sorts of barriers.” Even with the demands of his practice and study schedule, Logan is always excited to practice with the Special Olympics athletes, and he puts in many hours to advocate for acceptance and inclusion, encouraging his teammates and classmates to get involved. At the end of the day, Logan believes he’s getting back just as much, if not more, than he gives. “These athletes inspire me in all aspects of my life. They can teach many other athletes lessons on never giving up. I know that I am a better person working alongside them.”
