Striking Out Inequality

The varsity pitcher who makes the sacrifices and devotes the time to ensure a better future for everyone.

Justice Flora began giving back to his community at the age of seven. These days, it’s difficult to find a worthy cause that he doesn’t have a hand in supporting. In addition to competing as a pitcher and outfielder on his high school baseball team and being a top scholar, Justice is actively engaged in a wide variety of organizations and causes, from supporting his school’s baseball Boosters Club to serving as a bioengineering student volunteer at the community hospital. During his first three years of high school, he’s volunteered more than 2,500 hours of his time to service.

Justice is particularly partial to any mission that helps others carve their own path toward success, something he says has been modeled for him by his family his entire life. “My family has taken the right steps and has created a culture in which everyone is encouraged and driven into success,” he says. In his own ways, he’s helping create a more positive environment for others. He works with Safe Place Church Ministry to help children with disabilities learn ways to cope with their challenges. And for 10 years, he has hosted an annual shoe drive to benefit a school in Sierra Leone, West Africa. With the help of his friends, family, and community, he has been able to send more than 10,000 pairs of shoes to children in the impoverished community. “Through this project, I have been given the opportunity to support the lives of many children in need who travel on foot many miles a day just to get to school.”

While Justice is a Christian who dedicates many hours of service to his church, including the Children’s Ministry program, serving as an Usher Board member, and volunteering for Kidz Life Fellowship Ministry, he is always supportive of others who want to express their own beliefs. In middle school, when a Muslim friend was being mistreated and even receiving death threats, Justice hosted a school meeting to address the serious problem. “While I am a believer of the Christian faith, that doesn’t mean I can’t support and help a friend of a different faith who needed help,” he says. As his community service hours demonstrate, wherever there is a need or injustice, Justice will always be there to help.
