Ian Saum

Central Cass High School
Casselton, North Dakota

He finds his greatest satisfaction in helping others succeed.

Ian Saum knows a lot about personal success. Despite overcoming significant hardships, including watching a loved one struggle with substance abuse, Ian has found ways to excel in the classroom, on the sports field, as a writer, and as a tuba player. He’s motivated to make good life decisions that will pave his way to continued success. And he’s equally committed to helping other people achieve their own personal best, both on the field and off.

As an offensive lineman on his football team, Ian doesn’t get much glory for himself. But he takes great pride in protecting his quarterback and providing passage for the team’s running backs. He thoroughly enjoys the role he plays in the success of his team members. As a member of the basketball team, Ian not only plays hard, he works hard as the water boy, a selfless task that demonstrates his willingness to serve. Outside of school, Ian finds countless ways to give back to the community. He is president of his school’s Philanthropy and Youth club. He has organized blood drives. And he volunteers for organizations including the YWCA and the Churches United for the Homeless shelter.

When he’s not busy supporting others, Ian is finding new ways to challenge himself. Because few advanced classes are available at his small, rural school, he takes it upon himself to enroll in AP classes online, and he has attended summer institutes at Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley. From contributing to others to relentlessly preparing for his own future, Ian is a shining example of how selflessness, drive, and determination can lead to satisfaction and success, despite any obstacle that stands in the way.
