For the Love of Service

Integrity, drive, and leadership win on and off the court.

Whether perfecting his tennis stroke, representing his high school’s more than 2,000 students as student body president, or helping with meals at the local homeless shelter, Gage Gohl is driven to serve, and to serve to the absolute best of his ability. On the court, he is recognized as the best male tennis player in the state of South Dakota. And as a junior, he dropped only three sets all season long on his way to becoming the state champion. “It has become second nature to do everything I can with 100% effort and to never give anything less,” he says. That commitment has done much more than elevate his tennis stats; it’s made a lasting impact on his school and community as well.

With a high school career punctuated by numerous athletic accolades and titles, Gage says one of his greatest accomplishments is earning the position of student council president. “Being nominated by my class to be the president, as well as getting to have a say in some of the bigger decisions going on around the school, is something I take a lot of pride in.” The position gives Gage the opportunity to hone his leadership skills and to set an example for other students. But Gage has learned that you don’t need to hold the top spot to make an impact. The key to true success is to be willing to do your part and perform your best, no matter what role you have.

As a basketball player, he says, “I know that I am not the best scorer on the court, so I don’t try to be. I know that my leadership and hustle are what my team needs out of me.” And that’s exactly what he gives. In his community, Gage is always willing to give whatever is needed, wherever it’s needed, as well. He’s pitched in to pack meals for kids in need, prepared and served food at the homeless shelter, made fleece blankets to donate, spent time socializing with residents in shelters, and even donned a scrub brush to help make the local nursing home sparkling clean. For Gage, it’s not the title you hold or the position you play that matters; it’s your willingness to do your part and give your all in every situation that makes the real difference.
