Outrunning Adversity

Doing whatever it takes to overcome challenges and lead by example keeps this runner on track to win.

Devon Davey is a gifted athlete who has set multiple school records in three different sports. He thrives on competition and is an accomplished soccer and basketball player. But track & field is his greatest passion. It’s also the sport where he’s had to put in the most effort in order to succeed. As a sophomore, he experienced a false start during a conference meet. And as a junior, his times were slower than he would have liked at the beginning of the year. In both cases, he worked closely with his coaches, took their advice, and learned from the experience, putting in extortionary effort to push himself further. The effort paid off. During junior year, he became the sectional champion and a state qualifier in several events, breaking a couple of school records in the process.

Just as his coaches and family have made an impact on him, Devon hopes to positively impact others. Through hard work both on the field and off, he strives to lead through his actions and demonstrate what it takes to succeed as a student athlete. He maintains a perfect GPA, gets up early to practice, and trains nearly every day in the summer. And he volunteers his time to help other students in their own pursuits of excellence. He serves as a peer tutor and a youth basketball coach in addition to supporting various other school and community programs.

One of the service activities he values most is the youth mission trips he participates in with his church. While Devon always aims to set the example through perseverance and commitment, during last summer’s mission trip, he learned that at times, it is others who will set the example for him. He met a young boy on that trip who, despite leading a challenging life, had much perspective to offer and reminded Devon of the importance of being “considerate to people at all times because we truly don’t know what others have been through.” Devon learned that “interactions with others help to shape who you are as a person, and no matter who you meet, they can positively impact your life.”
