Ian McGrory

Seeing beyond challenges enables this soccer star to achieve the loftiest of goals

Wearing an eye patch in elementary school can be challenging for a child trying to fit in. Ian McGrory knows from experience. Despite stares, teasing and snickers from the other kids, Ian pressed on from being nearly legally blind in his left eye to 20/60 vision today. The experience also instilled in Ian an empathy for anyone who has a disability or is at a disadvantage. A true champion of the underdog, Ian is always one to help motivate his teammates and peers, especially when it appears the odds are against them. Whether on the soccer field or during a Boy Scouts outing, Ian will help anyone who is struggling or falling behind, taking them under his wing and encouraging them to achieve their full potential.

Two years ago, Ian had to apply this approach in his own life. When he broke his foot in the middle of the soccer season and had to miss several big games, he became worried his skills would suffer. But instead of letting the injury get the best of him, Ian began working with a trainer to build his core strength. When he was able to return to the field, Ian was an even stronger player than before. He learned that what can at first appear to be an obstacle can actually become an opportunity for greater success.

Ian channeled his passion for helping others into his Eagle Scout service project. The main pavilion at his local park was difficult for people in wheelchairs to access. So, Ian set out to construct a handicapped-accessible concrete pathway from the parking lot to the pavilion. With no knowledge of construction, Ian had to meet with engineers and learn how to develop blueprints for the project. He secured donations for materials, acquired necessary permits, and managed teams of Boy Scouts to make the pathway a reality. Dealing with the challenges along the way taught Ian a great deal about problem solving and perseverance. But his greatest reward is watching the people in his community benefit from the path his hard work helped bring about.
